Technology is also inscribed on surfaces.
On stones,
On metals,
On the skins,
On the lungs,
On neurons.
The installation Inscription Surfaces explores the material and tangible aspects of technological media, and the way we inhabit the emerging digital reality.
Geology, with its minerals and metals, forms the basis for the development of technology. The deep time of stones enables the micro temporalities of the digital age. Duration, immediacy.
The geological strata of millions of years, mining, technological devices and organic bodies, constitute inscription surfaces for the effects and affects of the digital age.
The project arises from the exploration of the geological deposit “Quebrada de Humahuaca” in Jujuy, Argentina. Near this area there is a brine used for the extraction of lithium, a material used in the development of batteries. Exploring the mountains revealed to me the vision of an encounter, of mirages, of contrasts. A place where the mineral wealth of the land and extractivism coexist at the threshold of the gaze.
The work explores the palpable intensities of the earth, intertwining materialities and temporalities involved in the continuum of the geological-technological-biological that shapes our world today. A composition that seeks to shift the gaze and navigate from descriptive structures to subjective readings.
